Extreme Heat & Climate Change Application

Graphicacy partnered with the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) to create an interactive application that projects what would likely happen in a user’s city or county if bold action on climate change was not taken immediately.

The Union of Concerned Scientists released a report — Killer Heat in the United States: Climate Choices and the Future of Dangerously Hot Days, which projected an alarming rise in extreme weather over the century due to climate change. To accompany the report, Graphicacy designed and developed a tool that would allow users to interact with the supporting data of the report.

To use the application, users simply key in their location by city or county. The application then instantly forecasts and displays the number of days per year across the U.S. when the heat index—or “feels like” temperature—will exceed heat thresholds based on different global warming emission scenarios. Without global action to reduce heat-trapping emissions, the average number of days per year nationwide with a heat index above 105°F would more than quadruple (to 24) by mid-century and increase eight-fold (to 40) by late century.

The application also quantitatively demonstrates that the number of dangerously hot days per year can be dramatically lowered in the future–if we take bold action now.
