National Geographic Magazine

Innovative science & technology

Our design team has worked on multiple art direction projects for National Geographic, including a “Big Ideas” series focused on world-changing innovations.

What would happen if we could no longer inhabit Earth? Could we move to Mars and make it our new home? Some scientists think it’s possible, but the process of transforming the red planet into an oxygenated, blue-and-green realm would take time.

An early concept sketch helped pitch the original idea.

“You don’t build Mars, you just warm
it up and throw some seeds.”

– Chris McKay, NASA planetary scientist
